Description
XnView is a name that very probably means something to you if you manage images on your PC. It is one of the best viewers and if it is well known, it is because there is a freeware version. Well, XnView Pocket is simply its Pocket PC cousin, a very complete program that is not missing much from its commercial competitors. The (French!) authors insist that it is a Beta version, but, after having gone through all the menus and tested images of a very respectable size, I could not even find the smallest problem.

I will not describe all the features, but it includes amongst others: a slideshow mode with the ability to create an executable, many different display size options, conversion between formats (JPG, GIF, PNG, etc), resizing, setting changes (contrast, luminosity, clarity) to name but a few. The authors await your suggestions to add to the program.

There is only a few icons directly accessible from the menu bar but this allows more room for the images. All the better since the menus are very complete and logically organised.

In short, excellent work in French (woohoo!) available for all platforms, even the oldest, MIPS & SH3, alas quite rare nowadays. To accompany a digital camera that comes with your Pocket PC, try this before buying something else: it is more developed than iPAQ Viewer, the standard on HP machines, and it may be enough for your purposes.

Applian PicturePerfect is an image viewer. It is, however, not just another image viewer a€“ PicturePerfect offers some useful features. The application is indeed powerful. The other advantage is its speed a€“ images are opened very fast, so are created the thumbnails. After the installation, you may notice that the image files are not opened by default by Picture Perfect. This is because user can choose the application he or she wants the image files to be opened with. It is possible to use PicturePerfect, Internet Explorer or Picture Viewer (iPaq only) for this purpose.

Having the file associations set, we can start viewing our images. To do it, you can either tap a file in File Explorer or open it from PicturePerfect. During the installation process, some sample images are installed with PicturePerfect. However, for the test I used my own picture taken in Venice taken two years ago.

The bottom bar contains two menus and some icons. The icons are: Fullscreen, Previous/Next Image, Zoom In and Thumbnails, which can be used to navigate albums. In thumbnail view mode you can view 4, 9 or even 16 image thumbnails on the screen simultaneously and easily locate the one you want to view. To make it even easier you can select the Enlarge option. This crops the image thumbnail, showing only the central part of it and thus revealing more details in the thumbnail view.
